Lia – Definitely Amidst

OK, I know, I know…. I have be very much amidst on my publishing my weekly exercise regime and commenting on your posts. Please accept my formal apology. I’d like to say, it will never happen again, but I am not sure.

What I have been doing though is walking and walking and reading all of your blog posts with much enjoyment.

In the last weeks I have managed over 5,000 steps per day except for one lame day. What is even more exciting to me is that I managed to walk an average of 7-8 thousand steps 90% of the time and I even manage over 11.000 steps twice. So, a pat on my back for sure.

I’d like to describe a visit to a spa place near our home that I’m trying to go to once or twice a month. If all goes well, I do this in the next week.

I’m so happy you are all still up and moving around…

Sara - rather inconsistent…

Hello, all — this week was more in my old pattern, off and on — but thanks to elderexercise, there are 4 “on” days and only 3 off, and thanks to Mr. Omron, I know what’s happening!  Weight fairly steady…

Mon. Nov 10 - 3601 steps; 170 cardio reps.

Tues. Nov. 11 - 10,272 steps (5192 aerobic).  Wore myself out on new elliptical machine in 3 minutes and was exhausted for 2 days!  (20 min. treadmill, 22 regular elliptical)

Wed. Nov. 12 - 3514 steps, 200 cardio reps.

Thurs. Nov. 13 - 5259 steps, 100 cardio.

Fri. Nov. 14 - 10,357 steps, 6038 aerobic (walked to Wegman’s).

Sat. Nov. 15 - 11,975 steps, 6490 aerobic.  I think this might be my top step count ever!  AND a gym adventure.  I decided to do intervals on the treadmill, as recommended by Prevention.  3 min. warmup, 7 min. brisk speed, THEN 2 min. running and 3 min. brisk, alternating these two — well, THEIR goal was to reach the 35 minute mark and then a cooldown.  I managed 4 sets of this alternation before returning to regular walk and cooldown.   I have added short spurts of running to my outdoor walks before, but never two minutes of it.  The second minute was really hard; by the 4th repetition, it was a touch easier.  First time I have ever tried this in a disciplined way.

Sun. Nov. 16 - 9209 steps, 5664 aerobic.  Yes I did get back to the gym but did more on the elliptical this time.  Only 2 reps of the run/walk routine since my leg muscles said “hello?” and I could hear you all saying, you’re doing great, don’t push too hard!

This will be a heavy work week, we have our big centennial celebration this Sunday, and the weather is going to be in the 30s all week with snow showers.  Hasta la vista, everyone, and happy walking!

Sandy - Nov 10th-16th

This was quite a good week for me:

Sunday - 2773 steps

Monday - 3246

Tuesday - 3833

Wednesday - 4584

Thursday - 6228 !!  (Thanks to Toby)

Friday - 4971

Saturday - 5010

Sunday - a very lazy day: woke up at 10 o’clock!!! Went to lunch with friends.

I am very proud of my increased steps and this week it didn’t feel as uncomfortable as last week when we were sightseeing and I did too much walking all at once.

Next week I aim to keep to the higher step count if possible and try the bike for a few minutes at a time,  provided it doesn’t hurt.

Holly - November 11 - 15

Thanks for all the encouragement! I need to get more steps going in my daily routine and also to commit more thoroughly to my health issues. Would love to find a water aerobics class to go to also. I’m a researcher by trade so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find. It’s just the usual, my needs seem to come last after my work is taken care of. I am keeping up with svaroopa yoga twice a week and did a blissful two day yoga workshop the weekend of the 8th and 9th.

Chronic pain in my right arm completely vanished during my week in Mexico (three massages that week helped also I’m sure!). It stayed away for at least a week but now I am back seeing the chiropractor again. Looks like no stress, fresh air, very little computer work is the answer :)

Tuesday November 11 – 5,300 steps
Wednesday November 12 – 4,921 steps
Thursday November 13 – 5,310 steps
Friday November 14 – 2,419 steps
Saturday November 15 – 2,393 steps

Oct. 11 - 3,565 steps

Oct. 12 - 9,668 steps and  1,386 aerobic

Though I haven’t been posting due to being away and … the election… you see I have kept notes on my steps! And I will be much more frequent in future. These are times that tried men’s (and women’s) souls…
Thank God Obama won! I have to say; I never doubted for a minute that he would win, I just did not foresee the huge margin he won by :)

Now as for Mexico… oh my. Had never been there before (and I have traveled all over the world, one of my former jobs was being on tour with a rock band through Europe, Australia, and New Zealand - also I love to travel - one of my favorite places in the world is Iceland). Anyway back to Mexico… it was divine. The weather was perfect, they had just had three weeks of rain so we were very lucky to get there after that was finished. It was gloriously warm and sunny but most of the week not humid except for one day. I stayed at a friend’s condo that was literally steps from the Gulf of Mexico. The TV wasn’t working (thank God) so the only sound we heard was waves crashing against the shore.

My morning routine was getting up very early around 5 or 5:30 and watching the sky get light over the water, the sunrise was usually around 10 to 6. Then I would meditate feeling the warmth of the sun on my face and hearing the waves. It was so wonderful! Also I was very lucky to be able to participate in Day of the Dead ceremonies with a community of Mayan women. I helped prepare the altar and also helped make hundreds of tamales for the big feast. It was beyond beyond. A trip I will never forget.

Here is a photo of my view from the terrace of the condo looking out at the water at sunrise:

Sara - An exciting and amazing week!

YAY,  a new President!  And we survived the process too, which is equally amazing!  I’ve also amazed myself with step totals (except for Thursday which was my crash day) and have to credit returning to the gym.  It is not FUN, necessarily, but I do feel so virtuous and actually very energized afterward.  I will describe my gym routine after reporting step stuff:

Sunday Nov. 2 - well, this was a bit of a crash day too - 4321 steps, 120 cardio reps.

Monday Nov. 3 - 10,627 steps (3786 aerobic).  240 cardio reps.  Gym - 15 minutes on treadmill and another 15 on elliptical.  I have found that I can put the treadmill easily on an incline of 2.5 to 3.5 — must be the result of those hills that I do on my neighborhood walks!

Tuesday Nov. 4 - 12,221 steps (6352 aerobic).  No gym.  Watched returns with the aid of some wine!

Wed. Nov. 5 - 11,657 steps (4843 aerobic).  Gym - 20 min. treadmill, 18 min. elliptical.

Thurs. Nov. 6 - 2806 steps, none aerobic.  Oh well!  100 cardioglide reps, see below.

Fri. Nov. 7 - 10,490 steps (7264 aerobic).  I think these steps were from walking to the grocery store.

Sat. Nov. 8 - 10,187 steps (6837 aerobic).  Walked to the bank.

Sun. Nov. 9 - 10,639 steps (6082 aerobic).  Gym - 24 min. treadmill, 22 on elliptical.

WOW, I am feeling very good about this.  If I can stay close to this through the winter, I will be quite happy!  Now for the gym routine — I used to avoid the treadmill but now I kind of like it as a warmup.  You can plug in your ipod earphones to the TV if you want, but I just listen to my music and use the TV as a dopey visual for distraction.  I’m gradually working up times here but actually am pretty pleased with being able to do a total of 40-45 minutes, combining the two machines.  The elliptical is more intense for leg & glute muscles but it is nice to observe that I’m stronger after a summer of consistent walking, thanks to Elder Exercise!  When I finish these two, I cool down with some floor stretches, situps, and some arm work with free weights.  This takes about 15 minutes and feels really good after the machines.  There is a nice women’s workout room at my gym which has plants and a pleasant lavender color on the walls and it is not usually too crowded.

It seems that my body is beginning to WANT its exercise.  When I tried to go to sleep on Thursday night I could not get there until I got up and did 100 reps on the cardioglide — which worked my muscles enough to help me drop right off.   Interesting!  So I must say my gym experience is paying off so far!   Happy walking, everyone, and thanks for all your good wishes for our President.  Let’s pray that he will be kept SAFE from those who would wish him harm.  That is my only concern at this point, really.  :-) s from the USA!

Sandy Nov 2nd-9th

This was a strange week as we had friends to stay and the routine was completely changed.

I didn’t wear the pedometer at all but some days I walked way over my accustomed amount and suffered for it - although it was worth it to go out and show them round.

We ate much more than usual as well so it’s back to sensible diet now.

Hope to be ‘good’ this week and report a reasonable step score next time.

Here’s wishing you all Happy Exercising.

Claude - too excited for regular exercise

It’s been a difficult week for exercise.
I feel I am way too old to sit up through the night waiting for the results of your elections, ladies! And the aftermath in terms of exercise was disastrous. But I loooooove the outcome so I guess it’s alright :D
Naomi asked about almonds. Here they are

my daily dose of almonds

My daily dose of almonds

I try to have them in the morning, figuring that this way, I’ll walk them off at one point or another during the day. Somehow, they keep me quite satisfied. I’ve always loved almonds.
Now for exercise.
Sat. Nov. 1 - 8,000 steps, (4,600 aerobics)
Sun. Nov. 2 - one of my friend’s sons brought her an iPhone from China and she can’t use it with her phone company, I can, so I just went to the market 3,500 steps, and spent the rest of the day studying the iPhone
Mon. Nov. 3 did nothing all day, except flickring, iPhoning and fiddling with stuff at home.
Tues. Nov. 4 was better 14,000 steps and my one-hour Feldenkrais session
Wed. Nov. 5 2,500 steps, really not much
Thur. Nov. 6 7,000 steps
Fri. Nov. 711,200 steps 1-hour stretching session
Sat. Nov. 8 6,323 steps (4,100 aerobic steps)
Yesterday, Sunday, it didn’t rain, but I just felt lazy. However, I had a theatre ticket for La Comédie Française in the evening, so I left early, took the bus to half the way, and walked briskly

Brisk walking and the iPhone timer

for 35mn as you can see

Again, I’m late in posting this week, but will really try to post on Saturday as promised earlier.
